Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit at the Istishari Arab Hospital provides care of premature and critically ill newborn infants. The premature baby will be moved to the NICU, and it may undergo a number of preliminary tests. The unit will provide round-the-clock care for the premature baby and it will also ensure continuity of quality care after the baby’s discharge from the NICU.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which consists of 40 incubators, is classified as one of the best-equipped units in the region. The unit is fully equipped with the most modern medical equipment’s and suitable facilities such as family waiting areas and rooms, and breast-feeding rooms. In addition to that, hospitalized patients are monitored by a qualified medical staff of neonatologists and nurses who work closely with doctors from many specialties in the hospital such as the Department of Hematology, Cardiology Department, Neurosurgery Department, General Surgery and Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Units.

• Performing breathing and heart rate tests
• Performing blood tests to monitor the number of critical substances in the body
• Performing ultrasound scans to examine the body organs
• Performing ultrasound of the heart to check for problems
• Perform an echocardiogram to check heart function
• Checking fluid input and output in the body
• Checking blood pressure, heart rate, breathing and temperature
• Performing a blood transfusion to raise blood volume in the body
• Giving fluids and nutrients through an intravenous (IV) tube
• Giving medications to promote maturing and to stimulate normal functioning of the organs
• Monitoring the patients carefully to understand which complications may require surgery
• Diagnosis and treatment of cases of incomplete growth
• Treatment of respiratory diseases and incomplete lungs
• Diagnosis and treatment of neurological and metabolic disorders of the newborn
• Diagnosis and treatment of neonatal infection
• Diagnosis and treatment of congenital and genetic abnormalities
• Diagnosis and treatment of heart disorders in newborns
• Diagnosis and treatment of cases of jaundice in newborns
• Follow-up and supervision of surgical cases of newborns before and after surgery

Dr. Amjad Rajab is a Pediatrics and Neonatology Specialist, with more than 9 years of experience. Currently he is Specialist in Pediatrics and Neonatology, Head of Pediatric Department, Head of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Head of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Istishari Arab Hospital.

Prior to joining Istishari Arab Hospital in Ramallah, Dr. Rajab worked at Islamic Hospital and Farah Hospital - Jordan.

Dr. Rajab graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Odessa State Medical University - Ukraine, and then he joined the specialization program in the department of Pediatrics and Neonatology at Islamic Hospital - Jordan.
